Prayer and Yoga

May you find rest and peace as you seek God through
this full body practice of prayer.

prayer & yoga

“The use of the body in prayer...is a way of deepening our life of prayer. Just as nonverbal communication relies on gestures, tone of voice, and speed of speaking to reinforce our words, physical acts extend the meaning of our worded prayers. Physical movement and meaningful postures indicate more fully what is on the heart of the person who is offering prayers to God...In this process the mind comes under the reign of the body... and we experience a genuine connectedness between what we do and what we think.” - Doug Pagitt in Body Prayer

Lent Week Six: Finished

4/5/2017

This week, we hear of Christ's final breaths in Luke 23: 44-46.

In Christie Purifoy's Roots and Sky pp. 124-125, she shares some of Christ's final words on the cross. She reminds us of the Psalm that Jesus quotes, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" We learn that this psalm ends, not in despair, but with hope. What is being redeemed or resurrected in your life? How can you proclaim the good news that it is finished, even when all feels unfinished?

Lent Week Five: Suffering

3/28/2017

This week, we read from Luke 23: 33-34, recalling the suffering of Jesus.

In Christie Purifoy's Roots and Sky pp. 70-74, she shares her dissatisfaction with living in an imperfect world while waiting for the Kingdom of God. However, she recognizes that God's invitation is to remember Christ, to rejoice in the day the Lord has made. How do you abide in this day, even as you remember Christ's suffering? How will you remember the promise of Christ to resurrect and return in the midst of your suffering?

Lent Week Four: Rejection

3/22/2017

For week four of Lent, we read from Matthew 26:69-65 and we remember Peter's denial of Jesus.

In Christie Purifoy's Roots and Sky pp. 121-122, she reminds us that we are getting nearer to the day when we remember the rejection of the Christ, not only Peter's rejection, but the world's rejection. How do you participate in the rejection of Christ? What do the last words of Christ have to offer us who are living in the “in-between”? Just as Winter reminds us of death, may we remember Christ's rejection, that we may then, with Spring, celebrate new life.

Lent Week Three: Confidence

3/15/2017

The third week of Lent, we remember the trial of Jesus, and the unbelief of the religious leaders. What do you hope for? What do you wish you could believe, if only you could see it?

In Roots and Sky by Christie Purifoy, pages 115-116, she reminds us that hope does not come with spring, that to hope then is to hope too late. Faith and hope come in winter, when the sky is grey and cold and the flower bulbs are buried deep in the ground. This week, keep your eyes open for “miracles in the rain”. How is God “tugging us and this whole wintry, weary world toward new life”?

Lent Week Two: Uncertainty

3/7/2017

As we begin the second week of Lent, journeying to the cross, we remember how Judas betrayed Jesus. How have you felt betrayed or uncertain of the future? What are the winds in your life that threaten your faith?

During this season, I'm reading Roots and Sky by Christie Purifoy, and on pages 114 & 115 she talks about the "cold, March wind". This week, notice the ways in which you and those around you might be feeling that “cold, March wind.” How might you “believe in green, growing abundance when the wind blows like this?”

Perhaps this scripture might be a handhold on a windy day?

Prayer and Yoga for Lent

2/28/2017

This Lenten season, join us for prayer and yoga!

Each week I'll post a video demonstrating the week's prayer vinyasa (the yoga word for sequence of poses =)) and a printable prayer card for you to use throughout the week. I'm also offering a full hour-long practice that you can download for a donation, just click the button below. If you want to do it together with a group, I've also got a group package available on that same page.

Yoga has proven to be a great complement to my spiritual life - I hope that this Lent it will offer you another way to make space in your heart and life to hear that still, small voice of God.

Matthew 5:6

"Blessed
are those who hunger and thirst
for righteousness,
for they will be filled."

In what ways are you “keeping watch” this Lenten season? Is there something you are giving up for Lent? Some way you are cultivating emptiness, to give God new space to fill? What do you hunger for?

Quietness Sequence: Prayer Card

11/9/2012

I stumbled across this scripture in my Bible reading this week, and thought how true this can be for me. How often would it be best for me to wait, to rest, to trust, but instead I choose to "ride off on swift horses"? How often have I bought into the lie that being busy will make me safe, productive & worthwhile? I recently attended a workshop on Yoga Therapy & the presenter talked about how much stress impacts our health - could it be that what we need most is to find strength in quietness & rest?

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:
“In repentance and rest is your salvation,
in quietness and trust is your strength,
but you would have none of it.
You said, ‘No, we will flee on horses.’
    Therefore you will flee!
You said, ‘We will ride off on swift horses.’
Therefore your pursuers will be swift!
A thousand will flee
    at the threat of one;
at the threat of five
    you will all flee away,
till you are left
like a flagstaff on a mountaintop,
like a banner on a hill.”
Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a God of justice.
Blessed are all who wait for him!

Isaiah 30: 15-18
